In Greek mythology, Phaedra is the daughter of Minos, king of Crete and wife of Theseus, king of Athens. Phaedra's name in ancient Greek meant "bright".
Though married to Theseus, Phaedra fell in love with Hippolytus, Theseus's son from his first marriage. But Hippolytus rejected her.
In revenge, Phaedra claimed that she had been raped by Hippolytus. Theseus believed her and cursed Hippolytus with one of the three curses he had received from Poseidon. As a result, Hippolytus's horses were frightened by a sea monster and dragged their rider to his death.
